Why is Marley Dance floor called "Marley"?

Have you ever asked or thought about this question before? Here is a little history and back story.

In the dance industry, the term “Marley” describes just about any roll-out vinyl floor used as a dance floor. The moniker turns out to be a bit confusing, since it could mean any number of very different dance floors used for a variety of purposes. So, where does the name come from?

Though the term “marley” gets used widely, dance vinyl flooring takes its name from the company that started producing it — the Marley Company.

The Marley Company

During the 1960s, the Marley Company in England made many vinyl floor, wall, and roof products. They developed a thin reversible vinyl black/gray flexible floor called “Stageflor.”

An executive’s daughter was a professional dancer who complained to her father about all the different theater stage surfaces she had to dance on while on tour. He came up with Stageflor. Urban legend or truth — it doesn’t matter. The Marley Company made each floor to order, and the customer had to handle the paperwork, shipping, and tax duty. It took five months to get a floor during those days.

Structuring team practice

This article is written from the perspective of a veteran coach. There are interesting things that take part in having a successful cheer program. One of the most important is a properly conducted practice.

Always begin practice with warm ups consisting of stretching and basic skills: forward rolls, backward rolls, handstands, handstand blocks, cartwheels and roundoff’s. A more advanced team would add advanced warm-up skills. But every team started with the skills listed.

An awesome cheer practice depends on the camaraderie that has built during the classes, continue to nurture the relationships. The warm up should be a time athletes are able to have a little free chat and discussion.. Coaches should allow discussion and chat during the beginning body stretch 10-15 mins before practice actually begins. Giving this time to chat will prepare the athletes to give full attention when class begins. Building camaraderie builds the sense of family and a strong, competing team.

After the warm-up give the athletes a water break. Everyone then returns to the mat and sits down to listen to the plan of action for this practice. The plan of action should always be delivered in a positive tone. Explain the parts of the routinen that need to be worked on, and skills that need to be perfected..

Working on individual sections of the routine will lead to athletic confidence and stronger performances. After working on each section of the routine, conduct three full completions of the routine. During the full routine presentations, the coach can see particular areas that need improvement for the next practice.

The last 15 minutes of practice should be dedicated to conditioning and strengthening. During class, a coach should be able to detect areas of muscle weakness of each athlete. Therefore, conditioning may be different for each person based on individual needs.

The high-powered, energetic, and relatable coaches are often the most successful. As a coach, take time to mentor each individual athlete and encourage greatness and self-confidence.

The Tumble Track to Air Floor Back Handspring Progression

The Tumble Track is a training tool designed to allow for increased repetition of tumbling and gymnastic skills by decreasing stress on body parts. An Air Floor is an air-filled tumbling track, commonly called an air track. It's great for cheer or gymnastics clubs, dance studios, mobile programs, or at home.

Over the years, we (the Glory and Power staff) have taught thousands of athletes countless skills, including back walk-overs, back handsprings, tucks, layouts, fulls and more using the progression technique mentioned below.

3 rules of thumb that we have used, and continues to be effective for expedited athlete skill progression:

  1. Uphill/Downhill Tumbling

  2. Reps, reps, reps

  3. Numerous surfaces to reduce body strain.

Extended Warranty on Spring floors

The reason we have such a long warranty is we build the floors so the boards will not break or shear. Birch boards only break when the spring comes off the bottom. We use a bolt to secure the spring retainer cap to the board. Prior to installing the bolt we coat each bolt with threadlocker. Most companies use 2 inch by 4 inch velcro we use 3 inch by 6 inch velcro. Other companies use a screw to secure the retainer cap, we use a bolt. Other companies do not add the glue due to additional costs and time. We would rather invest the time, knowing you'll have a floor to last a lifetime.

The Boulder Handspring Trainer

The boulder is the most effective tool for teaching back handsprings.

Unlike octagons and other shaped trainers, The Boulder® Handspring Trainer (U.S. Pat. No. 7,789,805) with its unique "single flat side" design ensures this product:

Stands ready for use and automatically returns to proper position after each use Properly supports user throughout the full motion Begins rolling only when user correctly transfers weight Encourages user to “snap down” Does not prematurely eject user Never rolls over or on top of user.

As shown in the video if the athlete does not explode with their legs then the boulder will not roll over. This wonderful safety feature ensures success and confidence. If the athlete does not reach the "superman" arched position with their arms behind their ears the boulder will not roll. Since the boulder is front heavy the athlete has to get to the arched position with their arms protecting their head.

Our JL-135 35" The Boulder® Handspring Trainer accommodates users 54" (4'6") to 60" (5') tall. This Boulder is 35" and 28" wide.

Martial Arts Spring Floor Frame Kit Install

For the Martial Arts Spring floors with the double spring edge we offer a beautiful Oak Frame Kit. Our frame kit we ship pre-cut 5' sections. Each kit comes with Oak furring strips (1" x 2") and Oak baseboard (1" x 6") for the ouside of the floor. The video above explains how to install the frame kit on the exterior of the spring floor for a beautiful finished look. The frame kit securely holds vinyl bonded foam mats or Tile mats in place. Each frame kit can be painted or stained. The Frame kit hardware is provided with the frame kit.

Tumbling Rod Floor Design improvement

FIG approved Tumbling Rod Floor for Gymnastics and Cheerleading.

Recently we introduced a new design feature on our FIG approved Rod floors! This new design feature increases the longevity of an amazing product. Previously with the old design on the end of each fiberglass rod a rubber cap was securely fitted prior to inserting the rod into the frame. This Rubber cap gave a tight fit for the rod within the frame. The end cap silenced the sound of the rod hitting against the metal frame.

During installation with our new design grommets are fitted inside the frame prior to inserting the rods. This does give a tighter fit within the frame. Having a grommet instead of a cap moves the friction point. Previously the loose point that created friction was outside of the cap and inside the metal frame. Now the friction point is between the grommet and the rod.

Previously because the rod and cap were consistently moving against the frame the metal would wear (tear) a ring in the rubber cap and eventually the rods would begin to bang against the frame with each tumbling pass. Now the extensive use does not lead to a noisy floor.

Cheer & Gymnastics Spring Floor Designs

Russian Baltic Birch is the wood standard for spring floors. This wood is vastly more durable than traditional plywood. The single layer floor design uses 5/8 inch thick plywood while the two layer floor is two sheets of 3/8th inch. The main difference in this wood is that the baltic birch has a solid core much smaller tolerances (it’s closer to perfection) compared to standard plywoods. There are almost no cracks, knots, holes or gaps in the wood layers as you find with traditional plywood. Standard OSB plywood is excellent for the side of a house however OSB is not built for the powerful impacts from tumbling. Additionally, the 3/8″ birch has 7 plys/layers of wood per sheet, while traditional 3/8″ plywood only has 3 plys/layers. These 7 plys/layers give the birch wood incredible strength and flexibility compared to traditional plywood. You will not see broken boards due to the strength of our spring assemblies.

Spring Assemblies for the spring floor

Springs can be attached with a rivet and a 2.25 inch washer. However this leads to springs coming off and dead spots in the floor. We at Glory and Power use a retainer cap to hold the spring. This secures the spring. Just as important is the hardware used with the retainer cap to secure the spring to the board. We use a T-nut and grade 5 glued bolts to secure the cap to the board. Some companies will use a screw to secure the cap. However, this can lead to issues later on with with weaker metal in the screw it can shear off or the head can waller out. Some builders may use liquid nails to secure the bolt we use thread-locker to secure the bolt in the t-nut. Under the spring there is an end cap to protect the floor and spring from constant scraping.

1 layer spring floor - Glory and Power does not manufacture this design.

A single layer floor will usually be made with 5/8″- 3/4″ thick plywood and use H-channels and straps to lock the boards together. Channels tend to move around, which is the downside. As a result, you will end up with soft spots over time as they shift out of place. This can also lead to boards shearing or breaking. Older athletes, especially male teenagers, will be able to break this floor apart over time.

Additionally, the straps can stretch and allow the floorboards to slowly shift. A single layer spring floor will not stay square over a period of time and gaps may form. Every so often, you may have to adjust the floor system and tighten the straps.

2 layer Birch Spring Floors

The Glory and Power 2 layer birch design uses a top layer of wood to cover up the seams of the bottom layer and to hold the floor together. The top board protects the cantilever of the bottom layer (the part of the board that sticks out past the spring at the edge of the board). Typically, 3/8th or 1/2 inch bottom layer is used with with a 3/8th to 1/2″ top layer. Use the floors for recreational tumble, cheer, gymnastics, Martial Arts and Dance.

Spring Floor Basics-Next Steps

Traditional plywood floors are the next step up from OSB. Over time, OSB or Chipboard spring floors will break up because of the lack of flexure. This wood is extremely weak and not ideal for spring floors. Standard plywood is more expensive but is dramatically stronger than OSB. Solid panel Plywood has a better ability to flex without breaking apart like OSB. Typically there are a lot of knots, gaps, and cracks within the wood, which weaken it over time, causing the floor to break apart. Although it won’t break as quickly as OSB, you will tend to have broken boards every 2-3 years.

Russian Baltic Birch is the new wood standard for spring floors. This wood is more expensive than traditional plywood, but the life-span is much longer due to its excellent construction. The single layer uses 3/4 inch thick wood while the two layers uses 2 layers for 3/8th. The main difference in this wood is that the birch is a very clean and flexible wood.

Gymnastics and Cheerleading Keywords

Gymnastics and cheerleading are two popular sports that require a variety of specialized equipment. Whether you're a beginner or a seasoned athlete, it's important to have the right gear to stay safe and perform at your best.

  1. Gymnastics mat: A gymnastics mat is a soft, padded surface that provides cushioning and protection during training and competition.

  2. Balance beam: The balance beam is a narrow, elevated 4 inch wide wooden surface that gymnasts perform acrobatic routines on.

  3. Uneven bars: The uneven bars are two bars of different heights that gymnasts use to perform acrobatic routines on.

  4. Vault: The vault is a table that gymnasts use to perform acrobatic jumps over.

  5. Floor Exercise: The floor exercise is a routine performed on a large mat. Gymnasts use a variety of tumbling, acrobatic, and dance skills to create their routines.

  6. Rhythmic gymnastics: Rhythmic gymnastics is a sport that combines gymnastics with dance and music. Gymnasts use a variety of apparatus, including hoops, balls, ribbons, and clubs, while performing their routines.

  7. Cheerleading mat: A cheerleading mat is similar to a gymnastics mat, but it is typically larger and thicker. Cheerleading mats are used for training, competition, and performances.

  8. Cheerleading shoes: Cheerleading shoes are designed to provide support and traction for cheerleaders while they are performing.

  9. Cheerleading uniforms: Cheerleading uniforms are typically brightly colored and decorated with the team's logo and colors.

Other popular gymnastics and cheerleading equipment include:

  • Leotards: Leotards are tight-fitting garments that are worn by gymnasts and cheerleaders.

  • Grips: Grips are worn on the hands to help gymnasts and cheerleaders maintain their grip on the apparatus.

  • Chalk: Chalk is used to dry out the hands and prevent slipping.

  • Spotters: Spotters are people who assist gymnasts and cheerleaders while they are performing.

  • Safety mats: Safety mats are placed around the apparatus to cushion falls.

When choosing gymnastics and cheerleading equipment, it is important to consider the following factors:

  • Skill level: The type of equipment you need will depend on your skill level. If you're a beginner, you'll need different equipment than if you're a competitive athlete.

  • Budget: Gymnastics and cheerleading equipment can be expensive. It's important to set a budget before you start shopping.

  • Quality: It's important to choose high-quality equipment that will last.

  • Safety: Make sure to choose equipment that is safe and meets all applicable safety standards.

Here are some additional tips for choosing and using gymnastics and cheerleading equipment:

  • Make sure the equipment is the right size for you.

  • Inspect the equipment regularly for wear and tear.

  • Replace damaged equipment immediately.

  • Use the equipment safely and responsibly.

  • Follow the instructions of your coach or instructor.

By following these tips, you can help ensure that you have the right gymnastics and cheerleading equipment to stay safe and perform at your best.

The importance of proper gymnastics equipment

Gymnastics is a sport that requires a high level of athleticism and skill. Gymnasts perform complex acrobatic movements on a variety of apparatus, including the floor, vault, balance beam, uneven bars, high bar, parallel bars, and pommel horse. Proper gymnastics equipment is essential for the safety of gymnasts and to help them perform their best.

Here are some of the reasons why proper gymnastics equipment is so important:

  • Safety: Proper gymnastics equipment is designed to reduce the risk of injuries. For example, gymnastics mats provide a soft landing surface for gymnasts to fall on, and spotting belts can help to prevent gymnasts from falling to the ground.

  • Performance: Proper gymnastics equipment can help gymnasts to perform their best. For example, a high-quality balance beam will be more stable and easier to walk on than a cheaper beam. This can help gymnasts to improve their accuracy and confidence.

  • Skill development: Proper gymnastics equipment can help gymnasts to develop new skills and improve their existing skills. For example, a well-designed uneven bars apparatus can help gymnasts to learn new tricks and transitions.

Articles showing the importance of proper gymnastics equipment:

  • A study published in the Journal of Orthopaedic & Sports Physical Therapy found that gymnasts who used proper equipment were less likely to experience injuries.

  • A study published in the journal Pediatrics found that gymnasts who used proper equipment were more likely to develop good balance and coordination.

  • A study published in the journal Sports Engineering found that proper gymnastics equipment can help gymnasts to produce more power and torque.

Conclusion:

Proper gymnastics equipment is essential for the safety, performance, and skill development of gymnasts. Gymnasts, parents, and coaches should all work together to ensure that gymnasts have access to the best possible equipment.

Tips for choosing the right gymnastics equipment:

  • When choosing gymnastics equipment, it is important to consider the age, skill level, and needs of the gymnast.

  • It is also important to choose equipment that is made from high-quality materials and that is properly maintained.

  • If you are unsure of what type of equipment is right for your gymnast, it is a good idea to consult with a qualified gymnastics coach.

It is also important to note that gymnastics equipment can be expensive. However, there are a number of ways to save money, such as purchasing used equipment or buying in bulk. You may also be able to find grants or sponsorships to help offset the cost of equipment.

A brief history of gymnastics

A brief history of gymnastics

Gymnastics is one of the oldest sports in the world, dating back to ancient Greece. The word "gymnastics" comes from the Greek word "gymnos," which means "naked." This is because Greek athletes trained and competed in the nude.

Gymnastics was an important part of Greek education, as it was believed to be essential for developing a strong and healthy body. Gymnastics competitions were also held as part of the Olympic Games.

After the fall of the Roman Empire, gymnastics declined in popularity. However, it began to make a comeback in the 18th century, thanks to the efforts of educators and physical culturists in Germany and Sweden.

In 1881, the International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) was founded. The FIG is the governing body for gymnastics worldwide.

Gymnastics became an Olympic sport for men in 1896. Women's gymnastics was added to the Olympic program in 1928.

Over the years, gymnastics has evolved into a complex and demanding sport. Gymnasts compete in a variety of events, including floor exercise, vault, uneven bars, balance beam, and horizontal bar.

Gymnasts must have a combination of strength, flexibility, power, and balance. They must also be able to perform complex skills with precision and grace.

Some of the most famous gymnasts in history include:

  • Larisa Latynina (Soviet Union) - won 18 Olympic medals, more than any other gymnast in history

  • Nadia Comaneci (Romania) - was the first gymnast to score a perfect 10 at the Olympic Games

  • Mary Lou Retton (United States) - won five medals at the 1984 Olympic Games, more than any other American gymnast

  • Simone Biles (United States) - won seven medals at the 2016 Olympic Games, the most by any gymnast at a single Games

Gymnastics is a popular sport all over the world. It is enjoyed by people of all ages and abilities. Gymnastics can be a fun and rewarding way to stay active and healthy.
