Pits, Foam Blocks, and Dismount Mats:

What pit is the best option for your gym and students? Is the best choice for your athletes the In-ground bungee pit system or, the above ground pit mat? An in-ground bungee pit would need either loose foam blocks or a pit mat.

Is digging an option in your building?

Is the businesses ready to invest in a bungee pit system?

The goal of using a pit is to ensure safe skill progression for each athlete. Aerial skills can improve with more air time by increasing body awareness. The in-ground pit system increases air time while providing safety. for the athlete to advance.

Inground Foam Block Pit

In-ground foam block pits are often the most desirable choice for a training pit. If a new gym is considered, a discussion regarding the design and pit requirements should take place with the builder and/or architect. Some suggested requirements for an in-ground pit would be, pit sealing and possible water removal. If an inground pit in a pre-existing location is considered, the gym owner may need to obtain quotes for construction costs. An inground pit allows for increased safety and athletic confidence while new skills are taught and mastered.

A foam pit is a great conditioning training area. A cargo net and/or a rope can provide opportunity for multiple learning stations. Pits are a great, safe attraction for open gyms and birthday parties for less skilled athletes.

Glory and Power sells Pit kits that are state of the art. They come with a sprung trampoline bed to support the foam blocks. The continued bouncing of the bed fluffs the pit and increases the life span of the blocks. This additional safety feature deceases risk of injury to athletes. A poorly built pit without a thick bottom mat or bungee system may not keep athletes safe.

There is regular maintenance necessary for foam block pits. A regular monthly fluffing of the pit is required to keep the pit full and blocks fluffy. Continued use of blocks causes them to become mashed in. Monthly maintenance allows more room between blocks for a fuller, safer pit. After time, the blocks will begin to show signs of the foam breaking down and the athlete will not stop as quickly and safely as before. When this happens, the blocks should be replaced.

Pit Mats

Pit Mats are a great piece of training equipment in any gym setting. Learning a new skill on a soft, safe landing surface will increase the confidence of athletes. Glory and Power sells pit mats that are state of the art. When training with a pit mat, the athlete is confidently controlling the skill. Coaches can add extra landing mats for firmer landing areas.

Other Alternatives

Other options available would be an inflatable pit that inflates with a blower. If the gym has limited space, or perhaps a temporary facility, an inflatable pit might be the best option. The Air Track Catcher is connected to the end of an Air Trak or Tumbl Trak, or may be used by itself. The inflatable Air Track Catcher offers a safe landing area for the athlete. The end height of the Air Track Catcher can be adjusted for the size of the athlete by adding foam mats to its 14in high base.

Suggested steps for teaching skills utilizing a pit, blocks, and mat:

Step 1
Athletes can practice skills landing in loose foam blocks once they are able to control the skill and feel confident to practice on their own.

Step 2

The coach could add a landing mat for a contact landing surface. Utilizing a landing mat will offer a little give and will allow the athlete time to learn to perfect the skill.

Step 3

An additional landing mat may be added to the landing. This will create a firmer landing surface to prepare the athlete for the floor landing. Once the athlete is able to control the landing and has confidence in the skill, it is time to move the skill to the rod-floor or spring floor with a spotter.

Step 4

When the athlete is able to perform the skill on the rod floor or spring floor as taught in steps 1-3, the spotter can be removed.

Opening a New Gym: What Equipment is Needed?

Opening a new gym, or gym related business, is an exciting opportunity for the you and your community. When you are considering this adventure brainstorm what your ultimate dream gym should be. Develop a written plan that considers every aspect of your future business. Write out the small incremental steps needed for an grand opening, and then project growth for future years. In the written plans, include each desired program that you intend to have. For example: gymnastics (girls and/or boys), tumbling, all-star cheer teams, dance teams, recreational program etc. Focus on creating a standard of excellence, or mission statement for your business along with a color scheme and gym logo. Parents love safe, positive places for their children to have fun, exercise, learn new skills, make friends, and become part of a community family of success.

Building and maintaining a positive culture is an important part of a business. Inform and train the teaching/coaching staff of your culture and ensure that they agree to adhere to those vlaues and beliefs. The business will grow when parents see the positive traits used to train and coach their child(ren). Gyms can be big, or small but what really sets them apart is the positive culture and community family.

Facility location is one key to being successful. The location should be visible to families who may be driving by the area, and should be listed on Google and iPhone maps. Follow the link to determine how to list your location on iPhone maps. Find out more here for Google and here for iPhone.

Things to take into consideration when choosing a location for a gym:

  • Does the facility/warehouse have enough parking?

  • Does the building have a lobby area?

  • Are there adequate bathrooms?

  • Is there room for future growth?

Once you find an affordable location with adequate space, make a list of equipment needed to open the first day, as well as a list of equipment you need and/or want for future growth..

Suggested items for your need list:

If you have ample space and budget, consider adding a Tumble Trak and Dismount landing mat to the equipment need list. The tumble track is a great piece of equipment that can be utilized for tremendous progression of tumbling skills allowing more repetition and less physical stress. Tumble Traks come with 3 different bed options: Original, Transition , and Extreme. The Original Tumble Trak is a normal black trampoline bed. The Transition bed has a carpet texture that is useful when attaching fundamental Fun Sticks and other spacing and training items while working on progression of skills. The Extreme bed is a vinyl covered bed that gives the athlete the pop needed to add height and strength.

Skills shapes that are needed in a beginning gym are various sizes Inclines. Differing sizes have been developed for differing age group and sizes of athletes. Inclines range in size from 2ft x 4ft (preschoolers), then 5ft x 12ft Jumbo Incline for the older athletes. Additionally, a mat to needed to add to a beginning gym would be various panel mats. Panel mats are great for drill practices and skill progression. A very useful tool for teaching an athlete to perform a handspring is a Back handspring machine. The back handspring machine encourages safe, proper techniques for a successful back handspring which then builds athlete tumbling confidence. Handspring Trainers come in 3 different varieties the Octagon, the Pac-Man and the patented Boulder handspring trainer. All 3 are available in different sizes to use for different size athletes.

Once the gym is open and students are enrolling, begin the want list. At the top of the want list is preschool equipment. Preschool growth is the key to a thriving Gymnastics, Tumbling, Cheer Gym, and/or Dance Studio.

Additional ideas for tumbling surfaces that are useful for athlete progression are a rod floor, or an air floor. Athletes will successfully use the Air floor pro to safely and confidently move newly learned skills from the tumble trak to the spring floor.

5 Drills for Trapezoids and Spotting Blocks

  1. Handstand Back handspring down the incline.
using the spotting block at the top of the incline. Have the athlete Perform a handstand on the block and focus on pushing off and pulling up with the torso while snapping down with the legs.

2. Round off Back handspring down the incline

3. Build a more powerful round off by Hurdling the trapezoid to begin the round off.

4. To improve tuck rotation, have the athlete stand at one end of the trapezoid and perform a backward roll on the trapezoid and landing on their feet at the opposite end.

5. For layouts have the athlete lay on the ground and place heals on the spotting block to practice pulling hips up and arms down for a great layout drill.

Air Floor vs. Rod Floor

When purchasing new equipment it's always hard to decide what are the essential teaching tools to start a new gym or added location. We all would love to start with everything, starting with every piece of tumbling equipment is not budget friendly and allows no room for future growth. Here is a comparison between the Rod Floor and the Air Floor. Each tool has more bounce than a spring floor. When beginning the ordering process ask the following questions. What options are available? What is the product and shipping costs? Does this tool aid us in efficiently and affectively use our space? What is better value for our program? Today we are going to compare the Air Floor Vs. Rod Floor

Rod Floors

Rod floors are a great training aid for athletes. Rod Floors are stiff enough for bigger athletes, but soft enough to help younger/smaller athletes too. Coaches find that this floor increases the learning capabilities of their athletes which allows them to progress faster. They are common in Gymnastics, Cheer and Tumbling facilities across the US. The tubular fiberglass rods ensure a fantastic amount of spring with increased safety. They are sold in 4’ X 6’ sections and covered by two rolls of foam (not included in rod floor cost). The rod floor units (without foam) are 8” tall when assembled.

A Competition Size Rod Floor is 84 feet (21 sections). Rods are covered by a layer of Carpet Bonded Foam (1 3/8") over a layer of 1.875" to 2" (50mm) polyethylene (aka Trocellen) foam with Scrim backed Foam. The Scrim side is placed directly on the rods for these floor. The Scrim will prevent the rods from chewing up or tearing up the bottom of the foam. You can make yours a custom length if you like (divisable by 4').

These Rod Floors require simple assembly to be done once received. Rod Floor units just abut each other. We would recommend that the legs be zip-tied to connect unit to unit if you select the Ross Floor, but this is optional.

AIR FLOORS

A great alternative to a rod floor especially if you have a smaller space such as a dance studio or are working on skills at home. The air floor is very similar to a rod floor and has a softer impact than the rod floor. This is a great training tool to be used in any location for several skills and drills.

The new Air Floor PRO at 8" thick, is a bouncier version of the regular three inch thick Air Floor and is not required to be placed on a padded surface. It can be a substitute for Rod Floor or as an all around training aid. The Air Floor PRO offers versatility in a gym, or as a portable station for mobile programs or exhibitions. Airhead Super pump included. These mats come in 3 different sizes, each allows for Velcro attachment to another unit.
Each unit includes an electric pump, a carrying bag and a Velcro flap which can be used to connect two or more pieces together creating a longer tumbling strip. The Air Floor Pro has a center line which can be used as a visual aid for tumbling. 3M units d-rings to easily attach the unit to uneven bars for a bar wall station. Additional accessories that you may want to purchase will be mini ramp for easy run up access and Booster blocks can be used for spotting off to the side. One-year warranty on material and workmanship.

Tips and Tricks #9 Time Management

Time Management

Coaches need to prepare for every class. Planning leads to becoming highly productive. Encourage your coaching staff to arrive early and prepare the gym for their classes. Making this a habit will eliminate wasted time during the classes.

It is suggested to change drill stations every week and maintain fun energy for athlete training. Athletes learn and perform at higher levels with age and ability-level appropriate drills and stations.

Air Incline vs. Spring Board

Incline Air mat 3x4.png
Untitled design (43).png

When purchasing equipment you need to know what you are buy it for. Is if for drills training or competition Training? Both of these products have similar uses but both have their own unique value as well. The Spring board is excellent for vault training from pre-school age athletes using the Little Thumper Board up through the competition and FIG approved spring boards for Men and Women.
By comparison the Inflatable incline is a fraction of the cost and a portable option for tumbling drills and skills.

Tips and Trick #7 Spring Floor Types & Maintenance

Spring Floor Maintenance

Spring floors are the most used apparatus in every gym. Unfortunately, they get the least amount of attention. It is recommended that gym owners take the carpet and foam off to inspect the floorboards and springs at least every two years. This is an important part of long term spring floor maintenance and injury prevention.

DOUBLE LAYER WOOD FLOORS

The biggest advantage of two-layer floor systems is there are no H-channels or straps to move or get loose. However, these floors are made of boards that will eventually break. The most common boards to break are the top boards. Cracks and breaks usually occur in the high traffic areas, the punching and landing zones. Additionally, bottom boards can break, but not as often as top boards. Be sure to inspect both layers of wood during your inspection.

PLASTIC FLOORS

Plastic floors are incredibly durable, but they require regular maintenance. Over time, springs can fall off, the H-channels will shift, and straps can loosen. As a result, gaps will form between the boards. Temporarily, Duct-Tape may be used to hold the H-channels in place, but eventually, the Duct-Tape will break and the channels will move. It is very important to inspect this floor every two years to ensure the channels are where they should be and there are no broken boards. Additionally, inspect the straps to make sure they are tight and that gaps have not formed between the boards.

SINGLE LAYER WOOD FLOORS

Single layer wood floors will have the same maintenance requirements as the plastic floors. However, with the single layer wood floor, the wooden boards will break and/or get cracks in them. Inspect the wood floor yearly, especially at the high traffic, punching and landing areas of the floor. The floor boards are most prone to breaking and cracking.

Tips and Tricks #5 Spring Cleaning

Spring Cleaning

Thoroughly cleaning the gym is important to the health and safety of student athletes. A thorough cleaning requires moving mats and cleaning areas that don't regularly get cleaned. Take time to disinfect and wash chalk off mats while inspecting for tears. Clean and inspect all floor areas and equipment.

Make it a work day for the whole staff to help keep equipment clean and properly maintained.

Mat Replacement Tips and Tricks #4

When is it time to replace a mat?

Mats are an important part of every gymnastics, tumbling, and cheerleading program. Mats must be in perfect shape to protect athletes. Therefore, gym owners must inspected all mats monthly, or at least quarterly, for tears in covers and the break down of the interior foam. Over time mats will break down from everyday use in a gym environment. When worn corners and tears are observed in vinyl covers, a replacement cover only can be ordered. When the interior foam deteriorates but your vinyl cover is still intact, replacement foam inserts can be ordered. Purchasing new gym mats can be a large expense for the gym owner. Therefore, repairing vinyl covers or foam inserts, will prolong the life of the mats at a lower cost.

Multiple use Tumbling Mats Tips and Tricks #3

Tips and Tricks #3
Mats with multiple uses

Top three mats you need in your gym.

1. Inclines - This mat can be used to teach an athlete a front roll to standing fulls. Inclines allow the athlete to gain confidence and they are an advantage when practicing skills.

View drills Here: https://www.instagram.com/p/BteghBpFGBZ/?igshid=1uk9xjk9m6bek

2. Panel Mats - The uses of a panel mat vary for every situation. Use panel mats for conducting drills and working in stations. Use one for handstands and have another panel mat for cartwheels and/or round-offs. Use panel mats for stretching drills or as a barrier for athletes that reach across their body when tumbling. The uses for this mat are endless. Definitely a must have for any gym.

3.Landing Mats - A good landing mat can go a long way, whether using it for a dismounting surface, on an apparatus, or learning skills for the first time on the floor. When partnered with a good throw mat, this combo allows for a softer landing when developing skills.
