The Floor exercise often is the most intense event to watch. The floor exercise incorporates smooth mixture of tumbling and dance, Athletes demonstrate control and strength with acrobatic skills all performed in an artistic manner. The gymnast performs a choreographed routine to the music of their choice. The routine usually consists of three or four tumbling passes, as well as leaps, jumps, and dance moves, and cannot be longer than 90 seconds. The floor mat is 40 ft. by 40 ft. and is usually made of carpeting over padded foam and springs.
The Beam Event is often considered one of the most difficult events. The gymnast completes a choreographed routine with a mount, leaps, jumps, flips, turns and a dismount from a padded, wooden beam approximately 4 ft. high and 4 inches wide and 16 feet, 5 inches, long. The exercise may not be longer than 90 seconds.
The Vault is often the deciding factor in team events. The gymnast runs down a runway, jumps onto a springboard, and is propelled over a vaulting “table” about 4 ft. off the ground. Each Gymnasts performs two vaults and the best score of the two vaults is taken.
The Uneven Bars takes the most strength and timing of all the events. The gymnast performs swings, release moves, pirouettes and a dismount from two horizontal bars set at different heights. The lower bar is usually about 5 ft. from the floor, and the high bar is about 8 ft. from the floor.
